1 Year = 403 days, divided into 13 months of 30 days + 1 intercalary holiday at the end of each month, named as follows:

Melanar Bloodmoon: 40 days

Surnest the Wanderer: 144 days

Surnest, the smaller of the two moons, has an eccentric, elliptical orbit of 144 days, being full at the furthest point of it’s orbit and new at the closest. Melanar has a regular orbit of 40 days. Given the marked difference in size, Surnest has a relatively minor effect on Melanar’s tidal influence except in syzygy. It is enough however, to be calculated and utilized by the Navigators’ Guild. On the other hand, states of syzygy can be quite powerful – even more so if they include the suns, that is during full or new moons. The greatest effect occurs during the very rare cases in which all five components are in syzygy producing quite extreme tidal states.

General Background and Usage Conventions

The calendar is Elven (Fehladurh) in origin (Khurorkh timekeeping was originally based on the cycles of Melanar Bloodmoon which also regulates the menstrual cycles of both ‘Orkhs and humans,) and is now in common usage by virtually all surface civilizations (If they speak Common then they’re at least familiar with it.) Because of the axial tilt of the planet is less than that of Earth the temperate zones are broader than those on Earth. Given the binary suns the planet is also generally hotter. The calendar begins in each hemisphere the day after the winter solstice on Mummer’s night, and the monthly names reflect the seasonal changes in temperate zones primarily, where the time around the summer solstice in the middle of Burning is often too hot and dry for many crops. Hence there are often two growing seasons – a short one in spring followed by a later autumn season with the equinoxes falling in the months of Growing and Waiting respectively. Winters are generally shorter and milder than Earth norm. Northern and Southern hemispheres start their calenders. At the equator the Malenorian Empire uses its own unique calendar, which although quite accurate and far more descriptive of the environment throughout the tropical region, has gained no more popularity in the neighboring realms than the Empire itself. Khurorkh (and many other) mariners continue to utilize their original time keeping regardless of hemisphere as its lunar data reflects tidal patterns throughout the world.

Days and dates are referred to by week (numbered) followed by day then month. For instance, “3rd Wind of Reaping,” which is abbreviated in writing as 3-4-11. Holidays are simply referred to by name and abbreviated as—#. Year numbering varies widely and for simplicity’s sake most references are in years BP (Before Present).
